Our Founder

E. Claiborne Robins created the Robins Foundation in 1957. Mr. Robins is best known for his transforming gifts to the University of Richmond, but he also supported a wide range of Richmond causes during his lifetime. His philanthropy reflected his abiding love and affection for the community that had nurtured him and helped him to build the A.H. Robins Company. At his death in 1995, he provided generously for the Foundation in his estate and, typical of his style of giving, he left no instructions for the Foundation’s board of directors. Today’s board seeks to continue our founder’s example of transformative philanthropy, and shares with the organizations it supports the joy that comes from working together to make good things happen.
